WiMAX Technology
WiMAX is a standards-technology based enable the delivery of road mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to broadband like cable and DSL. WiMAX provides fixed , portable and, soon, mobile wireless broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight with a base station. In a typical cell radius deployment of three to ten Miles , WiMAX systems can be expected to deliver capacity of up to 50 Mbps per channel, for Portable and fixed applications.
This bandwidth is enough to support hundreds of businesses with T-1 connectivity and thousands of residences with DSL connectivity. Mobile network deployments are expected to provide up to 25 Mbps of capacity within a typical radius deployment of up to 3.5 kilometers. It is the expectation of Technology users that WiMAX technology will be incorporated in notebook computers and PDAs in future, allowing for rural areas and cities to become “metropolitan zones” for portable outdoor wireless access.
Benefits
Equipment Suppliers
- Standard, common platform rapid innovation and the addition of new parts and services.
- specialization (i.e. Base Stations or CPEs) - no longer need to create an entire end-to- end solution as in proprietary model
Customers
- Avail services in areas that were previously out of the loop – in developing countries with limited infrastructure; in developed countries to remote areas
- More players in the market choices for receiving broadband services
- translating into reduced monthly rates
Service Providers
- Common Platform low costs, healthy competition and encourage innovation
- Relatively low initial investment and expenditures that reflect growth
- No commitments to vendor, a typical by-product of the proprietary technology
- Wireless systems significantly reduce operator's investment risk
